Much to the joy of people who are not too fond of resorting to rigorous exercise regime – you can lose weight in the winter without really exercising. Yes. Though many aren’t aware – but you can indeed lose substantial weight in winter. How?
Do read this on the digital health platform to explore in the course of the post.
At the very onset, it’s important to find out about the way the human body reacts to cold. It endures cold by shivering which again generates heat. And, one can lose substantial weight by shivering in winter only. In a study, subjects were asked to exercise in a 65-degree lab. Later they were asked to lie down on a bed which was chilled to 53 degrees until they started shivering.
Research published in the journal Cell Metabolism stated the results of the comparison between two tests. In one, subjects were asked to exercise in a 65-degree lab and then they were asked to lie down on a bed which was chilled to 53 degrees until they started shivering. Now, notably, in both the tests the subjects ended up producing a hormone which is called irisin. Irisin is responsible for converting slow white fat cells into metabolically active brown fat cells. The white cells are meant to store white fat while the active brown fat cells are required to bolster the rate of calorie burn.
Additionally, the shivering muscles released another hormone called FGF21 which shored up calorie burn further. It was also found that around 50 grams of brown fat can burn 300 additional calories daily. And, you can go on to lose that much of calories by resorting to a 30-minute jog.
A fat burn researcher Ajay Chawla (Unversity of California) opined that this is definitely not a permanent solution to weight loss but it can somehow go on to produce some weight loss nonetheless.
However, it should not be assumed that shivering just once or twice can help you lose weight. We will tell you why. Exposing yourself to cold can indeed stimulate the fat burning process but don’t expect that to happen if you are not continuously exposing yourself to cold and shivering. One has to understand the fact that brown fat is not active all the time. You also have to remember that overexposure to cold and consequent shivering can even lead you to resort to extra food intake. We have already told you that continuous shivering can help your body release energy and energy release is often accompanied by more food intake. So, it is important on your end to ensure that you’re watching your diet if you are willing to keep your weight under control.
Another major impediment on your way to losing weight by shivering is your general reluctance to expose yourself to such discomfort. Experts also suggest that you should not go on to expose yourself to chill showers every day though you might want to lose weight in winter by shivering. Getting cold occasionally is fine though.
So, in general, you need to understand that you cannot depend on brown fat entirely in a bid to lose weight. However, it was important to bring this piece of information (that shivering in winter can generate weight loss) quite simply because people didn’t know about the same.
Make sure you are leaving no stone unturned to educate yourself more about the nuances of weight loss and shivering. More education will tell you that to hold on to the weight thus lost by shivering you should resort to proper diet and exercise. It will not be prudent to advise that you can go on to lose weight solely by shivering in winter and that there is no role to be played by diet and exercise in the whole process at all. So make sure that you are making an informed decision in this regard.
Enjoy this winter and reduce your body weight!
