There are plenty of people in the world who suffer from a disease as complicated as diabetes. Some of these people also use alternative treatments in order to deal with diabetes. In fact, around 33.33 percent of people in the United States of America (USA) use these forms of treatment. The alternative treatments for diabetes are herbs, exercise, supplements, techniques of relaxation, and diet. However, if they use supplements on a long-term basis it could have a bad effect on their health. It is always better to talk with the doctors on a regular basis before taking any supplement in these cases.
One of the challenges in diabetes is to keep a lid on your sugar levels. Most often doctors prescribe conventional forms of treatment such as insulin injections just so that the patient’s blood sugar levels remain normal. Some people also use other kinds of treatments such as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. These therapies represent a kind of complete treatment in the sense that they treat your mind as well as your body. It needs to be kept in mind in this context that there is not much proof that the CAM therapies would work for you as well.
You might think of supplements to be completely all natural but there is nothing to say that it would not be interfering with the medication that you normally take. In fact, there is no such legal definition as far as the words ‘all natural’ are concerned.
The thing with this is that most people do not really think that diet and exercise are really alternative medicine but they indeed are, especially as far as diabetes is concerned. It is very important to eat and drink right and work out on a regular basis in order to control your sugar levels because they have a major impact in these areas.
If you eat healthy and have an active lifestyle it would have a positive effect on your sugar levels. Normally exercise is supposed to be recommended for people who suffer from diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) asks such people to do resistance exercises on a regular basis. This needs to be done at least two times a week. However, this is only for people who do not have any restriction on their activities. Examples of such exercises would include using resistance bands or lifting free weights.
People who are suffering from Type 2 diabetes should be doing aerobics activities – moderate to intense – for at least 150 minutes a week. The World Journal of Diabetes has recently come out with a study regarding the connection between exercise and Type 2 diabetes. As per the review, one of the best ways to control this kind of diabetes is to work out on a regular basis. With the help of exercise people suffering from this particular disease can reduce their blood pressure as well. If in case their blood sugar levels are too much on the higher side, then this can help reduce that as well. It can improve their glucose tolerance too.
ADA has made the same recommendations for those suffering from Type 1 diabetes as well. However, people with this kind of diabetes need to be careful as well. There is always a chance that during exercise their sugar levels could come down really low and that could be even worse than having high blood sugar levels. It is very important that during exercise they keep a close watch on their sugar level.
Herbs and supplements are also popular as CAM therapies for people who are suffering from diabetes. Various digital health platforms in India have held discussion in this regard.
However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not think of them as medicines per se. The main reason for that is the fact that they are not regulated as such and there is also a lack of definitive studies as such that would support the fact that diabetes could be treated with these supplements. In most cases, the popularity of these medicines comes by way of vocal publicity. This is the reason why before you start using these medicines as such you should definitely talk with the doctor. One of the most popular names in this regard is Aloe Vera. Others include cinnamon, ginger, bittermelon, fenugreek for Type 2 diabetes.
CAM can be a better way out over conventional treatment for Diabetes to avoid the side effects of drugs but one should always keep in touch with the doctors for proper monitoring of the disease.
